Free Bird Sound Identifier Online
Upload a short recording to find possible bird matches. Replay detected moments and compare the shortlist with what you heard and where you were.
Upload a bird recording
Choose a 3–30 second clip, up to 10 MB. WAV and MP3 work in most browsers; other formats depend on your browser. Keep birds undisturbed and avoid clips containing private conversations.
Your recording is converted locally, then sent to the bird-audio service only when you choose Analyze. Free daily limits apply.
Start with a clear recording
Choose a short clip with the bird audible above wind, traffic and handling noise. The tool accepts recordings between 3 and 30 seconds and converts them locally before upload. Trim a longer recording first.
Listen to the detected moments
Each suggestion includes a time range. Use the playback control to listen from that moment in your own recording. Overlapping species, mimics and background noise can create uncertain or incorrect matches.
Treat model scores as ranking signals
BirdNET supplies scores for candidate species. A high score is not a guarantee and should not be interpreted as the probability that the species is present. Compare the sound with a field guide and check whether the bird fits your region and season.
Understand a no-match result
An empty shortlist does not prove that no bird was recorded. Distant calls, low recording quality and species coverage can affect the result. A different clear segment may provide more useful evidence.
Record without disturbing birds
Stay at a distance and leave birds and nests undisturbed. Record natural calls instead of playing sounds to attract a response. Use the app for your continuing bird-identification workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I identify a bird from a recording online?
Yes. Upload a short recording for possible BirdNET matches, then listen to the suggested time ranges and verify them. The shortlist is not a confirmed identification.
Which recordings can I upload?
Choose a 3–30 second recording up to 10 MB. WAV and MP3 are commonly supported; other audio formats depend on your browser's decoder.
Is a model score a probability?
No. The displayed score ranks the model's suggestions. It does not certify a sighting or state the probability that the species is present.
Why did I get no bird match?
The sound may be distant, noisy, unclear or outside the model's coverage. No match does not establish that there were no birds in the clip.
When is my audio uploaded?
Selecting a file prepares a local preview. The recording is sent to the audio service when you press Analyze bird sound. Avoid uploading private conversations.
